Introduction

Khyber Institute of Ophthalmic Medical Sciences (KIOMS) is a comprehensive Eye Health facility located in Peshawar, Pakistan. Its mission is to provide excellent and equitable eye care to all in caring and compassionate manner. It has two wings-clinical wing & public wing.

The clinical wing has two professorial units-Hayatabad Medical Complex, and Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar. They have a total strength of 110 beds including 10 private rooms. Each unit has its own fully equipped department with all modern diagnostic facilities & operation suites. 

The public health wing of KIOMS, Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology (PICO) is responsible for the epidemiological, preventive and community eye health service in Pakistan, countries of Eastern Mediterranean Regions & other developing countries of the world. It is also involved in research and advocacy for district based National Eye Care program.
 

Aims & Objectives

The clinical wing is designed and structured with a view to train doctors in the specialty and enable them to pass examination of major and minor diplomas in the country and abroad and to enable them to practice as consultants/specialists in the field of Ophthalmology. PICO is National Resource center for manpower development in the field of Ophthalmic Paramedics, Ophthalmic nurses and community Ophthalmology. It is involved in research, epidemiology and operational research.

The PICO is running courses in Community Eye Health in the following subjects:

 1.       MSc. (Community Ophthalmology)
 2.       B.Sc. Honors in Vision Sciences
       a.       Refractionist
       b.       Optometry
       c.       Orthoptist
3.       Ophthalmic Technicians
4.       Ophthalmic Nursing  

These courses are for candidates of WHO, from Eastern Mediterranean regions and developing countries of other regions.
 

Faculty

The clinical wing comprises of two Professors, an Associate Professor, an Assistant Professor, four Senior Registrars, two Consultants; PICO on the other hand had a
Director General, Executive Director and Director Academics/Research, an Ophthalmologist ,a Bio-statistian and other faculty members. 
 

Facilities

The KIOMS is an integral part of postgraduate medical institution with its two attached teaching hospitals, Hayatabad Medical Complex and Lady Reading Hospital. These hospitals house other disciplines like general medicine, pediatries, neurology, nephrology, dermatology, cardiology, endocrinology Gastroenterology and surgical disciplines like general surgery, cardiovascular surgery, neuro-surgery, cardiac surgery, pediatric, gynecology and obstetrics, urology and orthopedics. These hospitals have well established supportive departments like department of imaging, equipped with latest CT scanners and MRI and also well established department of  pathology specializing  in microbiology, hematology, clinical pathology and Histopathology. Each hospital has an auditorium where once a week clinic opathological conferences are held. Each hospital has a well-stocked postgraduate library with CD Rom and internet facilities.

KIOMS has been developed as a well established for center for teaching, training and research. It has fully equipped indoor and outpatient department with all modern diagnostic facilities which includes fundus fluorescein angiography with imagenet, ultrasonography, Biometry, Hess Screening, perimetry, electro-physiological testing, and pachymetry. Services are available for refraction, low vision and contact lens dispensing. Surgical facilities include facilities for routine cases as well as for phaco-emulsification, vitrectomy, Oculoplasty & orbitotomy. We have also the facilities of Microsurgical Training Centre, wet lab, and a well equipped Microbiological Laboratory. Eye Bank is playing an active role in the corneal services field.

The institute provides general OPD services on Tuesday and Thursday and sub-speciality clinics on Monday, Wednesday & Friday.

Paediatric Ophthalmology , Uveitis, Glaucoma & Neuro-Ophthalmology

Oculoplasty & orbital disorders, Medical & Surgical retina





 


Tutorials/lectures & Journal clubs are held once a week each Moreover KIOMS has its own very well established learning resource centre.
